Kewzing, Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary and Rangit Valley
Kewzing location is in the altitude of 5577ft with the highest peak Maenam (11483ft) and valleys of Rangit river valley 1148ft from the sea level is the home to around 200 bird species. The sanctuary is famous for its wide variety of birds found in this area. Maenam wildlife sanctuary is also famous for Red Panda, the state animal of Sikkim. Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary is covering an area of around 35 sq. km.
It takes approximately 4 hours to trek from Ravangla to Maenam peak. Permits and entry fee for all levied by the Wildlife Division of the Forest Department.
Pelling, Khecheopalri and Yuksom
Pelling is situated in West Sikkim district at a distance of 117km from state capital Gangtok and is on of the favorable area for birding where many species of birds call their home. Few good species like Cutia, Fire tailed Myzornis, Scarlet Finch, Scaly Laughingthrush can be sighted at Khecheopalri Lake which is also known as the wishing lake. Khecheopalri lake is at a distance of 22km from Pelling. Many waterfalls lies at the way from Kewzing to Pelling to Yuksom.
Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary
Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary in West Sikkim is another location having a huge gathering of birds during the month of September-October. Few of the bird species are Firecapped tit, Kalij Pheasants, Satyr Tragopan, Parrotbills, Laughingthrush, Rosefinch, etc. Red Panda is also found in this sanctuary.
Barsey Rhododendron sanctuary spreading over 104 sq. km. spans over the Singalila range.
Apart from birdwatching, Barsey Sanctuary is visited during the month of March-April for its magnificent view of rhododendron flower which is the state flower of Sikkim.
Bulbulay and Fambong Lho Wildlife Sanctuary
These birding sites have been identified for those who have landed in the capital town and wants to experience birding in this part of Sikkim. In this site most of the birds are common but still worth looking out for the first time birders in this part of the world. Some of the birds to look out for in this area are Rufous-capped Babbler, Red headed Laughingthrush, Brownish-flanked Bush warbler, Slaty-bellied Tesia and more. In Fambonglho some of the birds to look out for are Rufous-Throated Wren Babbler, Indian Blue Robin, Grey sided Laughingthrush Rusty- fronted Barwing, Rusty-cheeked Scimitar Babbler, Blue-fronted Robin, Grey-bellied Tesia, Chestnut-Headed Tesia and many more.
The Birding watching trek can be done form Yuksam to Dzongri in the Khangchendzonga National Park where within the span of Eight to nine days good number of Bird species like Rufous-Backed Sibia, Himalayan Cutia, Sarlet Finch, Satyr Tragopan and also a good number of high altitude species like Blood pheasant, Himalayan Monal, Garndala, Snow Pigeon can be sighted during the Trek.
Kitam Bird Sanctuary
Kitam bird sanctuary is situated in the south region of the Indian state Sikkim at an average altitude of 2200 ft. above the sea level. Kitam is home to more than 200 species of birds and butterflies. The beautiful village of Sumbuk and its gladiolas fields, few age-old temples and the emerald green Rangit River make Kitam one of the most beautiful and untouched wilderness in the lower altitudes of Sikkim.
